Environmental Remediation
The EHS department, in association with our colleague organizations in Real Estate and Capital Development (REDCO) and the department of Design and Construction, oversee a variety of environmental remediation projects on NJIT campus. Individual projects typically arise during the initial phase of construction activities, such as excavation, when environmental concerns maybe encountered. Another mechanism by which environmental remediation projects are initiated is associated with the acquisition of real estate when an initial environmental assessment is required.
Being located in an urban setting with an industrial past, the most common environmental issues encountered on the NJIT campus are typically related to underground fuel storage tanks, historic fill, and potentially contaminated groundwater*. NJIT engages a variety of environmental engineering firms to assist with site remediation in compliance with the NJDEP Site Remediation Reform Act. The goals of the site remediation regulations as well as the individual remediation projects undertaken by NJIT, are to protect both public health and the environment during the various phases of site development and use.
Occasionally members of the campus community will notice environmental remedial projects underway at NJIT, typically characterized by the presence of drilling equipment engaged in the installation of environmental monitoring wells at various campus locations.
Specific questions regarding these projects maybe directed to Mitchell Gayer, Exec. Director of Environmental Health and Safety at 973-596-5736 or at gayer@honornm.com.
Note:
* Groundwater refers to subsurface water present in the pores, fractures, and fissures of the surrounding underground geologic materials. At NJIT all drinking water is supplied by the municipality (City of Newark) and is not related to groundwater.
